![]() ![]() When you use logical volumes, you can assign multiple physical disks to the same logical volume, which means that all those disks are seen as one partition from the user’s perspective. This allocation of unpartitioned space can be done dynamically through both the command line and graphical user interfaces without rebooting the computer. Logical volumes allow you to leave unpartitioned space on the hard disk and add it to a specific partition as needed without having to back up your data and reformat the hard drive. In the following sections, I will point out the features of the LVM. While Linux can run on a single partition, additional partitions improve system performance. ![]() Linux assumes that a hard drive will be partitioned as part of the basic operating system installation, with specific partitions called “/var,” “/usr,” “/tmp,” “/home” and “/boot.” The “/boot” partition is where your operating system lives, while the other partitions hold applications, spool files and error logs, temporary data, and user data. Windows and OS X assume that the hard drive is a single monolithic partition. The capability has been built into the Linux kernel since 1999. ![]() Logical volumes are an alternate method of partitioning hard drive space. ![]() We have a volume manager called “LVM,” which comes with OS installation by default in the Linux operating system. This blog will outline and dive deeper into the components of a Veritas Volume Manager. It also documents common error messages and suggests solutions.Symantec’s Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) is a storage management subsystem that allows you to manage physical disks as logical devices called volumes. This guide describes how to recover from hardware failure, configure and recover disk groups, and log commands and transactions. Veritas Volume Manager Troubleshooting Guide This guide also describes the Veritas Thin Provisioning and SmartMove™ features which let you take advantage of thin storage. To use FlashSnap, you need a separate license. This guide also gives you guidelines about how to use FlashSnap software to implement point-in-time copy solutions for backup and database replication. To use CDS, you need a Veritas Storage Foundation license. CDS lets you move VxVM disks and objects between machines that run different operating systems. This guide provides more information on using the Cross-platform Data Sharing (CDS) feature of Veritas Volume Manager. Veritas Storage Foundation Advanced Features Administrator's Guide You can also use VxVM to dynamically configure storage while the system is active.įor more information on administering Veritas Volume Manager, see the following documentation: VxVM provides the tools to improve performance and ensure data availability and integrity. This allows volumes to span multiple disks and LUNs. VxVM overcomes restrictions imposed by hardware disk devices and by LUNs by providing a logical volume management layer. Additionally, VxVM provides features that enhance fault tolerance and fast recovery from disk failure or storage array failure. By supporting the Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) model, VxVM can be configured to protect against disk and hardware failure, and to increase I/O throughput. VxVM provides easy-to-use online disk storage management for computing environments and Storage Area Network (SAN) environments. A VxVM volume appears to applications and the operating system as a physical device on which file systems, databases and other managed data objects can be configured. Veritas TM Volume Manager (VxVM) by Symantec is a storage management subsystem that allows you to manage physical disks and logical unit numbers (LUNs) as logical devices called volumes. ![]()
